Indrani Granted Bail In Daughter Sheena’s Murder Case, SC Says ‘Already Spent 6.5 Yrs In jail’

Mumbai: The Supreme Court has granted bail to Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the case involving her daughter Sheena Bora’s murder, saying that she has “already spent 6.5 years in jail”.

A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao, BR Gavai and AS Bopanna passed the order in a special leave petition filed against the Bombay High Court order in November 2021, which had rejected his bail plea.

The bench said that the case is based on circumstantial evidence and even if the prosecution rejects 50 per cent of the witnesses, the trial is not likely to end soon.

“She will be released on bail subject to the satisfaction of the trial court. The same conditions will be imposed on Peter Mukerjea.”

Mukherjee is facing trial for the alleged murder of his daughter Sheena on April 24, 2012. He was arrested by Khar Police on 25 August 2015 and is lodged in Byculla Jail since September 2015. Her ex-husband Peter Mukerjea, former CEO of Star India and Sanjeev Khanna are co-accused in the case. Peter got bail last year.

In January this year, Indrani submitted a letter to a special court in Mumbai, claiming that she had reason to believe that her daughter was alive. He made the same claim in a letter to the CBI in December 2021.

Mukherjee, in his application, said that a fellow prisoner lodged in Mumbai’s Byculla Women’s Jail had told him that he had seen Bora alive in Srinagar’s Dal Lake in late June or July. The prisoner that Mukherjee referred to is former police inspector Asha Korke, who is in jail for an extortion case.

The CBI had refuted Indrani’s claim, saying it was a “figment of her imagination” and “next to impossible”. “Her application has no merit, the same has been filed with malafide intention to delay the hearing of the trial,” the CBI said.
