Last US Soldier Leaves Afghanistan, Ending 20-Year War; Pentagon Shares Pic

Afghanistan: The Pentagon on Monday posted a photo of the last American soldier who left Afghanistan, ending America’s longest war which lasted 20 years. He led the evacuation mission on the ground as one of the commanders.

In a photo released by DVIDs, Donahue, the communications arm of the Department of Defense, is shown boarding a C-17 cargo plane at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. Charge d’affaires Ross Wilson was also on board.

In the photo, Donohue is seen boarding the plane with a gun in his hand. A night-vision lens captured this image giving it a green tint.

“In awe of our Sky Dragon Soldiers,” tweeted the XVIII Airborne Corps (based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina) with the photo of Donahue. “This was an incredibly tough, pressurized mission filled with multiple complexities, with active threats the entire time. Our troops displayed grit, discipline and empathy.”

Donahue and Rear Admiral Peter Wesley, commander of the US Forces Afghanistan Forward, led the evacuation operation that began on August 14 and evacuated more than 122,000 individuals, including 6,000 Americans.

Despite the fact that not everyone who wanted to leave Afghanistan, McKenzie applauded the American troops who evacuated many people led by Donahue and Vasily.

As the US deadline on Tuesday neared withdrawal, Donahue was deployed to Afghanistan earlier this month to secure Kabul’s airport. Although the Pentagon declined to disclose specific numbers, there was an increase in the US military presence in Afghanistan recently.

Donahue, a former special assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, also served as Commander, Special Operations Joint Task Force-Afghanistan, supporting Operation Freedom’s watchdog.
