LPG Prices For Commercial Cylinders Increased By ₹266 From Today

Mumbai: Ahead of Diwali, the price of commercial LPG cylinders was increased by ₹266 on Monday. However, the saving grace is that the price hike was made in commercial cylinders and not on cylinders for domestic use. There was no change in domestic LPG prices.

After this hike, the price of the commercial cylinders in Delhi went beyond Rs 2,000. Earlier it was being sold for Rs 1,733. A 19 kg commercial cylinder in Mumbai, which was earlier sold for Rs 1,683 has now increased to Rs 1,950 after today’s hike. The price of a 19 kg commercial cylinder has now increased to Rs 2,073.50 in Kolkata and Rs 2,133 for this product in Chennai.

No change was observed in the price of the LPG cylinders for domestic use. In the national capital Delhi, a non-subsidized 14.2 kg LPG cylinder is being sold for Rs 899.50. It is worth noting that the prices of domestic LPG were increased on 6 October. The cost of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in Kolkata is Rs 926 while in Chennai it costs Rs 915.50.

Considering the rising crude oil prices, it is expected that the domestic LPG cylinder prices may soon cross the Rs 1,000 mark.

So far this year, the prices of domestic LPG cylinders have increased from Rs 694 in January to Rs 899.50, an eight-fold increase.

The two main factors that determine LPG cylinder prices in India are the global crude oil prices and the dollar-rupee exchange rate as the crude oil prices are denominated in US dollars. Brent crude is now hovering around $84 a barrel, while the dollar-rupee exchange rate closed at 74.88 points on Friday, putting pressure on LPG prices.

As per existing rules, households are eligible to get 12 cylinders of 14.2kg each at subsidised rates. Any quantity over this has to be bought at market price or non-subsidised rates.
