Maha: IMD Issues ‘Red Alert’ To Mumbai, Raigad, Thane Heavy Rainfall On June 13

Mumbai:  India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Mumbai is very likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on Sunday.

Similarly, a ‘red alert’ has also been issued for Ratnagiri and Raigad districts in coastal Maharashtra.

“With the formation of a low-pressure system in North Bay of Bengal, and its likely inward movement along with it getting intensified, the Maharashtra coast is likely to witness heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rain in the next four to five days,” said KS Hosalikar, scientist, IMD.

“The Raigad and Ratnagiri districts have been given a red alert today while Mumbai and Thane are on red alert for Sunday and the trend of heavy rain will stay. Mumbaikars must take care and not go out unless for very urgent work,” Hosalikar added.

Earlier, IMD had issued an orange alert issued for Mumbai, Pune, Satara and Kolhapur districts in western Maharashtra for the coming days.  However, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials have said that do not visit beaches.

“People are advised to not visit beaches, seafronts etc. Temporary shelters in BMC schools located in 24 civic wards have been kept ready. The officials of various agencies have been asked to report to the disaster control room for better coordination,” an official said.
