Maharashtra Elections: Voter Turnout In Thane Less Than 50 pc

Mumbai: Thane district in Maharashtra recorded less than 50 per cent of voters in the assembly elections held on Monday, collector Rajesh Narvekar said.

In the district’s 18 assembly constituencies, an average of 47.91 per cent polling was recorded, which was two per cent lower than the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year, he told reporters here on Tuesday.

In urban areas, voters were less in urban areas than in rural areas.

He said the migration of migrant population to Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Aroli regions could be one of the reasons for the decline in voter turnout.

Out of 63,92,357 eligible voters in the district, only 30,62,544 exercised their franchise, according to official figures.

Of the 18 assembly constituencies, 13 recorded less than 50 per cent turnout, the collector said.

Shahpur recorded 64.80 per cent of the votes, while Dombivli in the district recorded the lowest turnout of 40.72 per cent.

Narvekar said that counselling of voters and deleting the names of deceased persons could improve the voting percentage in future elections.

On Thursday’s counting of votes, Narvekar said EVMs and VVPATs were stored in strong rooms in all assembly segments amid tight security.

He said that each assembly constituency will have a supervisor, who will be in charge of the counting process.
