Maharashtra To Get 60k Vials Of Antifungal Drug From June 1: Tope

Mumbai: Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Tuesday that the state would receive 60,000 vials of the major drug Amphotericin-B for treating patients with mucormycosis from 1 June.

Maharashtra has 2,245 patients with mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, Tope told reporters after attending a review meeting on mucormycosis and COVIDA-19 cases in the state.

Tope said the state has issued a global tender for the purchase of amphotericin-B vials for the treatment of mucormycosis. He said, “The state will get 60,000 vials of medicine from June 1. This would be an additional supply in addition to the existing allocation of medicine by the Centre.

The minister said that there are 2,245 patients of black fungus in the state and 1,007 of them have already come under the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY).

“Under MJPJAY the entire cost of treatment of mucormycosis patients will be free of cost including the cost of medicine. The state is also trying to reduce the cost of treatment for mucormycosis patients admitted to private hospitals,” he said.

Tope said that the Maharashtra government has issued a GR (government proposal) in relation to such treatment and the finance department has allocated Rs 30 crore for it. There have been many cases of mucormycosis, a rare but serious fungal infection in COVID-19 patients in Maharashtra and some other states.
