Over 8L Evacuated From Low-Lying Areas In West Bengal Ahead Of Yaas: NDRF

Mumbai: In the wake of the upcoming cyclone Yaas, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said on Tuesday that more than 8,09,830 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas in 14 districts of West Bengal.

NDRF has taken the maximum number of teams for deployment in Odisha and West Bengal as a precautionary step

The federal contingency force has committed a total of 112 teams for deployment in the five states and union territories of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which are expected to be affected by the cyclone developing in the Bay of Bengal. Of these, 45 teams have been nominated for the maximum number of 52 teams for Odisha, followed by West Bengal.

On the other hand, the NDRF said that the rest of the teams are being deployed in states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and union territories like Andaman and Nicobar Islands. NDRF Director General SN Pradhan said in a tweet that this is the biggest commitment of his teams so far in the two states of Odisha and West Bengal.

Cyclonic storm Yas is likely to reach Balasore in northern Odisha around Wednesday afternoon. The Meteorological Department said on Monday that it can move at a speed of 155 kmph – 165 kmph, with a speed of 185 kmph.

Each team of the NDRF consists of 47 personnel equipped with tree and pole cutters, communication equipment, inflatable boats and basic medical assistance.

The senior official said that these teams, along with various disaster combat and mitigation units, are currently conducting evacuation and awareness campaigns in the affected areas so that no one is killed.
