Mamata Makes Bengal Chief Secy Her Chief Advisor After Centre Orders His Recall

Mumbai: After the Centre ordered the recall of West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay to Delhi, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that she won’t allow him to leave Nabanna (Bengal CMO).

She announced that Bandyopadhyay had retired as Chief Secretary and would now serve as Chief Advisor to the CM for three years.

This comes after Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra to withdraw the Centre’s order to recall Bandyopadhyay, and said her government “cannot release, and is not releasing” the top bureaucrat.

Addressing a press conference, Banerjee said, “As Alapan Bandyopadhyay retires from his service today, May 31, he is not going to join Delhi. I will not let Alapan Bandyopadhyay leave Nabanna. He will continue as Chief Adviser to CM for the next three years.”

She also announced that HK Dwivedi has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Bengal and BP Gopalika has been appointed as the new Home Secretary.

Banerjee, in a five-page letter, requested the Prime Minister today to reconsider the Centre’s decision to recall the Chief Secretary after extending the extension by three months.

Banerjee termed the order as “unilateral” and pointed out that it had been done “without any prior consultation” with the state government.
