Mehbooba Mufti Tweets She Is Placed Under House Arrest, Shares Pics

Mumbai: Former Jammu and Kashmir CM and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday tweeted that she is placed under house arrest “because according to the administration the situation is far from normal in Kashmir”.

“GOI expresses concern for the rights of Afghan people but wilfully denies the same to Kashmiris. Ive been placed under house arrest today because according to admin the situation is far from normal in Kashmir. This exposes their fake claims of normalcy,” Mufti said in her tweet.

The administration has not yet given any official response on Mufti’s house arrest.

The announcement comes a day after Mufti’s statement that the last rites of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani should have been performed as per the wishes of the family.

On September 5, Mufti had tweeted: “Having turned Kashmir into an open air prison, now even the dead aren’t spared.A family isn’t allowed to mourn & bid a final farewell as per their wishes. Booking Geelani sahab’s family under UAPA shows GOI’s deep rooted paranoia & ruthlessness. This is New India’s Naya Kashmir.”

To put to rest speculations that the senior separatist leader’s body was allegedly desecrated, the Jammu and Kashmir Police yesterday posted a video clip of Geelani’s burial, in which all Islamic rites were followed. The video shows Geelani’s body wrapped in a white shroud, bathed properly and lowered into the grave while reciting verses from the Quran.

After the death of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Internet and mobile services were suspended in the region.

As of this morning, the Jammu and Kashmir Police confirmed that most restrictions have been lifted, including Internet restrictions, and the situation in both Kashmir and Jammu is fully normal.

Following the abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that accorded special status to the erstwhile state, Mehbooba Mufti and other prominent leaders of Kashmir were placed in detention in 2019.
