Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil alleged that the “disclosures” in the report meant that the government “misled” the Supreme Court and Parliament on the issue.

“Why @narendramodi is silent? It is @PMOIndia’s duty to clarify. New York Times revelations today that It did indeed subscribe by payment from tax payers money of ? 300 crores to spyware Pegasus sold by Israeli NSO company,” he tweeted.

“This implies our Govt misled Supreme Court & Parliament,” Gohil said.

This comes after an investigative report published by The New York Times states that the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi bought the spyware tool Pegasus in 2017 as part of a major arms deal with Israel.

The spyware was developed by NSO Group and is capable of remote monitoring smartphones.

The NYT report alleged that India’s purchase of spyware was part of a “package of sophisticated weapons and intelligence equipment worth approximately $2 billion” between the Indian and Israeli governments.
