MS Dhoni Steps Down As CSK Captain, Ravindra Jadeja To Lead

Ravindra Jadeja has been retained for INR 16 crore by the franchise

Mumbai: CSK has announced that MS Dhoni has stepped down as captain ahead of IPL 2022 and has picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team.

Ravindra Jadeja has been retained for INR 16 crore by the franchise. CSK’s official website confirmed the news while more details on the matter are yet to come.

Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond, according to the statement.

“Jadeja, who has been an integral part of CSK since 2012, will only be the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent CSK this season and beyond,” the franchise said in a statement.

Jadeja is only the third captain of CSK in IPL history, second only to Suresh Raina after MS Dhoni. Jadeja has been associated with the franchise since 2012 and only played for different franchises in the 2016 and 2017 editions when CSK was suspended.

This is also the first time that CSK will be led by a different player in a full-time capacity and it clearly indicates that Dhoni is grooming the franchise to move on from him. It is still unclear whether this will be his last season or not, but it will be the first time he will be playing in the yellow jersey as a player.

Dhoni, who has been the captain of CSK since the inception of the league in 2008, may play his last IPL this season. He has already retired from international cricket.

CSK have won the IPL title four times (in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021) behind only Mumbai Indians and have the highest match win percentage (64.83%) among all teams in the IPL.

They also hold the record for most appearances in the playoffs (eleven) and the Final (nine) of the IPL.

Defending champions CSK will open their campaign against last edition’s runner-up side Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium here on Saturday.
