NCP Demands Speedy Trial Of Unnao Accused, Change In law

Mumbai: The NCP on Saturday demanded a trial in the fast-track court of the accused in the Unnao rape case, following which the victim woman, who was kept on Thursday, died in a Delhi hospital.

Nawab Malik, the chief spokesperson of NCP, also asked if the accused were being shielded by the government machinery.

“We want the accused to be arrested as soon as possible and sentenced through trial in fast-track courts,” Malik told reporters here

Malik also said that there was a demand from some quarters that the “Telangana pattern” be followed even for the accused in the Unnao case, which was not correct.

Four accused in the Hyderabad woman animal rape-murder case were killed in an encounter on Friday.

“This is not right. In Hyderabad, people are saying, justice was delivered. But it was done in an unjust manner.
Nobody has the right to punish someone,” Malik said, adding that proper judicial process is followed in the Unnao matter.

He said that NCP wants amendments in the law to ensure that the trial of gang rape cases is completed within a stipulated period, and mercy petitions in such cases should also be fixed within the stipulated time.

The 23-year-old Unnao rape victim who was airlifted to Delhi and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital with 90 per cent burns died on Friday night.

The woman was set afire by five men, including two of her alleged rapists, on Thursday morning when she was going to Rae Bareli to attend a court hearing.
