NDA’s Harivansh Narayan Singh Is New Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman

Mumbai : On Thursday NDA candidate and JD (U) leader Harivansh Narayan Singh elected as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. He got 125 votes against the opposition BK Hariprasad who got 105 votes in House with the majority to 119 votes. The election was upheld after the former Deputy Chairperson and Congress leader PJ Kurien retired from the house on 1st July.

The new Deputy Chairman is a journalist who later turned into politics and is a first-time lawmaker and even considered to be close to JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar.

Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present during the voting who congratulated Singh after achieving the victory. He tweeted, “An accomplished writer, journalist and active Parliamentarian, I am sure he will further enrich Parliamentary proceedings in his new role.” On the other side the opposition leader in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nazi Azad also congratulated Singh. He said, “In elections, some on wins and someone loses. But the Deputy Chairman is no longer a part of any single party. He belongs to the country now.” He also said he has a hope from Singh that he would even give opposition members to raise their issues.

After the transplant surgery, Union Minister Arun Jaitley made his first appearance which extended to his best wishes to Chairman. The entire leader from the house wishes Singh a good luck and congratulated him. Ministers like Ananth Kumar, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ram Gopal Yadav, Ram Das Athwale and Sanjay Raut.

Parties like Shiv Sena, BJD, TRS and AIADMK supported NDA. While BK Hariprasad for the support from Congress, TMC, DMK, Left Parties, SP, BSP, NCP, TDP Votes. While YSRCP and AAP boycotted the session.

“I have learned a lot working with you all, and am certain that it will help me deal with matters better. I am also nervous because I will be working with Parliamentarians who come with a lot of experience and knowledge,” said the newly-elected Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh
