Our COVID-19 Vaccine 100% Effective On Kids Aged 12-15: Pfizer
Mumbai: American pharma company Pfizer on Wednesday said that its COVID-19 vaccine was 100% effective in a Phase 3 trial in adolescents aged 12 to 15 years. The trial enrolled 2,260 participants in the United States.
With schools preparing to reopen across the globe by fall, children could take the shots before heading back to physical classes.
Currently, Pfizer’s vaccine is authorized for ages 16 and older. But vaccinating children of all ages will be important to prevent the pandemic and help schools, at least the upper grades, begin to look a little more normal after a few months of remission.
The pharma chief tested 2,260 American volunteers, ages 12 to 15, and preliminary data showed that there were no cases of COVID-19 in fully immunized adolescents compared to 18 in those who gave dummy shots.
Children showed similar side effects as young adults. The main side effects are pain, fever, chills and fatigue, especially after the second dose, the company said. Pfizer and BioNotech will continue their study to track participants for two years for more information about long-term safety and security.
What remains uncertain is the dosage. In the trial, Pfizer gave participants of the age group of 12-15 years the same dose that adults receive, while testing different doses in younger children.
