Palaniswami Elected As AIADMK’s Interim General Secretary, Post Elections In 4 Months

Mumbai: During a meeting held on Monday, Edappadi Palaniswami was elected as AIADMK’s interim General Secretary. AIADMK General Council has adopted resolutions for reviving the general secretary post.

It has also adopted resolutions to ensure electing a person for the post by the primary members of the party.

The developments came as a setback for the Madras High Court, which had allowed Tamil Nadu’s main opposition party to hold its general council meeting comes as a setback to the party’s former coordinator O Pannerselvam (OPS) who had petitioned the court for a stay.

The HC order was passed at 9 am and the GC meeting was held at the party office in Vanagaram under E Palaniswami, which was presided over by A Tamil Mahan Hussain, chairman of the praesidium. The meeting passed 16 resolutions, one of which abolished dual leadership and created the post of deputy general secretary and ensured the election of one person to the office by the party’s primary members. The party’s election will be held in four months.

The second resolution demanded Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour for E V Ramasamy ‘Periyar’ and C N Annadurai and later Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. After Jayalalithaa’s demise in 2016, the party has followed a dual leadership formula with EPS as co-coordinator and OPS coordinator. Since the meeting of the District Secretary on June 14 this year, the ruckus has intensified regarding any one leader in the party.

Meanwhile, supporters of EPS and OPS facts clashed on the streets of Chennai ahead of today’s court verdict. Some people were injured in the clash. Stones were pelted at the party headquarters by OPS supporters, Kolathur district secretary Krishnamurthy, and EPS supporters. Before the meeting, supporters of OPS and EPS pelted stones at each other and also burnt posters and banners.

OPS supporters protested outside AIADMK’s headquarters in Royapettah. Visuals showed OPS supporters hitting E Palaniswami’s photo with slippers. Some of OPS supporters were seen breaking open the door of the AIADMK office.
