People’s Laxity May Bring About Third Wave: Maha Health Min

Mumbai: Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that there could be a third wave of coronavirus infection if people do not follow the norms of the outbreak like maintaining hygiene and wearing masks.

The minister also said that there could be over 5,000 unproven COVID-19 deaths in the state, and these would be reconciled with the overall tally after all information about these is verified.

He told a regional news channel that it was not the road congestion that could have triggered the third wave of COVID-19, but “people not wearing masks and not the following hygiene”.

“No one can accurately predict the third wave. But by wearing a mask and behaving appropriately, we can postpone its arrival and keep the impact to a minimum,” Tope said.

On the issue of updating of COVID-19 deaths and unreported cases in the subsequent days, Tope said the Maharashtra government would never hide such figures, but, in some cases, private hospitals would allow local civic authorities to use their facilities. will be allowed to use. There is a delay in reporting the death.

“I have come to know that in some cases, death of patients was reported after 15 days. Sometimes the death of patients transferred from one district to another gets uploaded on the system many times. Hence, the state government carries out a reconciliation exercise to arrive at the exact figure,” Tope said.

“The second wave hit very hard and all health systems came under stress. There may be some 5,000 unreported deaths in the state, which would be included in the overall report as soon as information verification is completed,” Tope said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Friday recorded 9,798 new COVID-19 cases, taking its case tally to 59,54,508, while 198 fatalities raised the death toll to 1,16,674, the health department said.

Of 198 deaths, 133 occurred in the last 48 hours while 65 took place in the last week. Another 450 deaths which had taken place earlier were added after the reconciliation of records.

The death toll, overall, went up by 648. Discharged patients outnumbered new infections. With 14,347 patients getting discharged during the day, the total of recoveries reached 56,99,983.

There are 1,34,747 active cases in the state. The recovery rate of Maharashtra is now 95.73%, while the fatality rate is 1.96%.
