Plea In Bombay HC Seeks Z Plus Security For Adar Poonawalla, Family

Mumbai: A writ petition has been filed in the Bombay High Court seeking ‘Z plus’ security for CEO of the Serum Institute of India (SII) Adar Poonawalla and his family.

Last week, the entrepreneur was given the ‘Y’ category security across India by CRPF in view of “potential threats”. In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 16 April, Prakash Kumar Singh, Director (Government and Regulatory Affairs) at Pune-based SII, requested the security shield.

Director (government and regulatory affairs) at the Pune-based SII, Prakash Kumar Singh, had requested the security cover in a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on April 16.

Now, a petition has been filed by Mumbai-based advocate Dutta Mane, who has also sought to register an FIR against those who had allegedly threatened Poonawala to supply the vaccine.

The Serum Institute is currently manufacturing the AstraZeneca vaccine at Covishield, University of Oxford, which aims to protect against coronovirus. Covishield is one of two indigenous COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in India.

The CEO of the Pune-based pharmaceutical company claimed to have received aggressive calls from some of the most powerful people in India, seeking supplies of Covishield. Poonawalla said that vaccine-making is a specialised process and ramping up the production overnight is not possible.
