RIP Sushma Swaraj: Country Has Lost A Beloved Politician And A Mother Figure

Mumbai: Sushma Swaraj a leader who was known for helping others, a leader who turned Twitter into helpline, a leader who was a mother figure to all Indians has left us alone.

Swaraj who was elected seven times as a Member of Parliament passed away last night at 10.00 PM at AIIMS hospital due to cardiac arrest.

She was also known as the youngest cabinet minister of the Indian state of Haryana.

Swaraj began her political career with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the 1970s. Her husband, Swaraj Kaushal, was closely associated with the socialist leader George Fernandes and Sushma Swaraj became a part of George Fernandes’s legal defence team in 1975.

After the Emergency, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Later, she became a national leader of the BJP.

She became the Minister of External Affairs in the union cabinet on 26 May 2014. Swaraj was called India’s ‘best-loved politician’ by the US daily Wall Street Journal.

During her tenure as the External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj handled several strategically-sensitive issues, including Indo-Pak and Sino-India relations.

Sushma Swaraj has previously also held the portfolios of Information and Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Health and Family Welfare, and Parliamentary Affairs in the Union Cabinet.

One of the most prolific politicians of India, Swaraj’s sudden demise triggered a wave of shock and grief with leaders.

Swaraj’s mortal remains were taken to her Delhi residence.

Her mortal remains will be kept from 12 pm-3 pm at the BJP headquarters on Wednesday for party workers and leaders to pay tributes, BJP working president JP Nadda said. Her last rites will be performed at the Lodhi crematorium, he added.
