‘They Were Waiting For Elections To Be Over’: Opposition Corners Centre As Fuel Prices Hiked After Over 4-Month Gap

Mumbai: With fuel prices rising after a gap of more than four months, the opposition hit out at the Center saying they were waiting for the elections to be over.

In February-March this year, polling was held in five states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa, Punjab. Petrol and diesel prices were hiked by 80 paise per litre on Tuesday, while domestic cooking gas prices were hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder, the first revision after a gap of more than four and a half months. Also Read: Petrol, Diesel Prices Raised By 80 Paise Per Litre After A Gap Of Over 4 Months

Slamming the Centre, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor wrote on Twitter, “They were just waiting for the elections to be over.”

Another senior party leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the only cheap things under the Narendra Modi government are “communalism and hatred”.

“Congratulations to PM Modiji for achieving his ‘target’ of ₹1000 per LPG cylinder in most parts of the country. There will now be daily ‘Vikas’ in Petrol & Diesel prices as well. The only affordable things under Modi Govt are communalism & hatred. Everything else is expensive,” he said in a tweet.

Congress national spokesperson also criticised the government over the fuel price hike and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “costly days” are back with BJP’s poll victory.

Meanwhile, opposition parties disrupted the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha over the hike in the prices of petrol, diesel, cooking gas.

After the revision of rates, the price of petrol in Delhi has increased from Rs 95.41 per litre to Rs 96.21, while the price of diesel will now be Rs 87.47 per litre as against Rs 86.67 per litre. With this, the price of non-subsidised LPG cylinders in the national capital has been reduced to Rs 949.50 for every 14.2 kg bottle.

While LPG rates were last revised on October 6, 2021, petrol and diesel prices had remained unchanged since November 4 as five states including Uttar Pradesh and Punjab went to polls.
