UP Assembly Elections 2021: Will Remove EVM System If SP Comes To Power Says, Akilesh Yadav

Not only Akhilesh, but Mayawati, has also been demanding for the ballot to be used in the elections instead of EVM

Mumbai: Ahead of Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, on Friday former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav announced that if Samajwadi Party comes to power in the state, his government will remove the EVM system.

“Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will lose the ballot polls. Remove EVM and make the Samajwadi Party form government again. A country like America is using ballots…”  the SP leader said while addressing the media in Lucknow.

This is not the first time Akhilesh has expressed his apprehensions over the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in the country. Last month, he had appealed to the workers to be alert to EVMs and DMs. Akhilesh had alleged that EVMs and DMs were dishonest in Bihar and got the right answer in Bengal.

Reacting to Akhilesh Yadav, BJP leader Amit Malviya has hit back saying that he is scared of losing polls.

“Is the fear of defeat haunting you? The election hasn’t even happened yet. The pain of not being able to loot booths due to EVMs is clearly visible. By the way, in the EVM machine with VVPAT, a slip is also dropped like a ballot. Akhilesh Ji seems to have lack of information,” Malviya tweeted (roughly translated from Hindi).

The former Uttar Pradesh CM had told the SP workers that the BJP has got an evil eye on the booths and in such a situation, it is time for the SP workers to be tested to save democracy.

“This time (in UP polls), we have to be careful of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and district magistrates (DMs) and we have to give an answer to the BJP by raising awareness among the public. It is a question of future and democracy,” he had said.

Not only Akhilesh, but another former Uttar Pradesh CM, Mayawati, has also been demanding for long the ballot be used in the elections instead of electronic voting machines.

Despite the Election Commission denied that the machines cannot tamper with, the Opposition parties in the country have repeatedly raised doubt about the infallibility of electronic voting machines.

The Legislative Assembly elections will be held in Uttar Pradesh in the month of February to March 2022 to elect 403 members. The term of the current assembly elected in 2017 will expire on March 14, 2022.
