Up To 7-Year Jail Rs 5Lakh Fine For that Guilty Of Violence Against Health Workers: Govt

Mumbai: The central government has brought an ordinance to end violence against health workers, which is a cognizable, non-bailable offense for those convicted with imprisonment of up to seven years.

“We have brought an ordinance under which any attack on health workers will be a cognizable, non-bailable offense. In the case of grievous injuries, the accused can be sentenced from 6 months to 7 years. They can be penalized from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakhs,” Union Minister Prakash Javadekar briefed media after the meeting of the Union Cabinet.

Javadekar said that an amendment will be made to the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, and the ordinance will be implemented.

Javadekar said, “Such an offense will now be cognizable and non-bailable. The investigation will be done within 30 days. The accused can be punished from three months to five years, and be fined from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh.”

In addition, if the damage occurred to healthcare vehicles or clinics, compensation for double the market value of the damaged property would be taken from the accused, Javadekar said.

It is in the midst of a nationwide lockdown in view of COVID-19.
