Viswanathan Anand Defeats World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen In Sudden Death Game

Mumbai: Former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand defeated world champion, Magnus Carlsen, in Armageddon (sudden death game) after their regular match ended in a draw in the Classical section of the Norway Chess tournament.

After winning against Norwegian Star in the first blitz event of the classical class, Anand posted a thrilling victory at Armageddon (a game of sudden death), after which the regular match ended in a 40-move draw.

At Armageddon, 52-year-old Anand repeated his magic when he defeated Carlsen to win 50 moves. With 10 points to his count, the Indian grandmaster leads the field with four more games to go to the prestigious tournament, featuring some of the best players in the game.

Anand started the classical category with three consecutive victories, beating Maxim Vachier-Lagrave (France), Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) and Hao Wang (China) as American Wesley So ended his winning streak in the fourth round.

As a result, former world champion Magnus was sharing the lead with Carlsen on 8.5 points. Carlsen is in second place with 9.5 points, despite losing to his longtime rival.

After Sunday’s result, Anand is leading the charts with 10 points, while Carlsen is a half a point behind. Wesley So and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov share third place.
