Washington Played At No. 8 But It’s Not Permanent: SRH Coach Tom Moody

The head coach criticized his bowlers for no-balls, which ultimately led to SRH's defeat against RR

Mumbai: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Tom Moody has heaped praise on all-rounder Washington Sundar and said that he will play a ‘critical role’ for the franchise in the days to come. Sundar played a stormy inning of 40 runs in just 14 balls with the help of five fours and two sixes. Also Read: IPL 2022: We Had Opportunities But Fine Margins Didn’t Go In Their Way Feels SRH Skipper Kane Williamson

“We recognized that Washington is an excellent all-rounder, so we were excited to have him in the mega auction. We are hopeful that over time he will play a vital role with bat and ball. At the moment, with the balance of the side, he was positioned at No. 8 but that’s certainly not the permanent position for him,” said Tom Moddy during the postmatch press conference.

“We know with an open mind where it is going to end with time, whether it is this season or the coming season. We believe there is some real quality there,” he added.

The head coach further criticized his bowlers for no-balls, which ultimately led to SRH’s defeat against RR.

“It is unacceptable – a no-ball in this form of the game. You get a heavy penalty and we have paid the price. When you get the best of the opposition out and you are on the edge, especially at the start of your innings – Bhuvi was bowling well and [Romario] Shepherd’s first cover was also a strong over – it sets a completely different tone when you have taken that wicket and the ball are still spinning,” said the head coach.

“It wasn’t an easy new-ball wicket, but we didn’t take advantage of it. Once you give life to someone with the quality of Jos Buttler, he’ll bring out all his moves and realize he’s independent. I think four no-balls in the first five overs, a no-ball wicket and a dropped catch [off a no-ball] in the first five overs, and a total of six wides cost us this game,” he added.

Rajasthan pacers wreaked havoc on Hyderabad batters as Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult reduced them to 9 for 3.

Sanju Samson led from the front scoring 55 from 27 balls to take his team’s total to 210 for 6 in 20 overs. Samson bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his blistering knock.
