Mamta Banerjee said that strict action will be taken against SDPO and OC for negligence. “There is a big conspiracy. Police will conduct a fair investigation. Take strong action,” she said.

The Bengal government is also installing CCTV cameras in the area as per the order of the Calcutta High Court on March 23, news agency ANI reported.

Eight people were killed when several houses caught fire in Rampurhat in the early hours of Tuesday. This happened after the killing of Bhadu Sheikh, a resident of Bogtui village, and a local Trinamool leader. Residents said the violence was probably a result of an old enmity between two factions of the Trinamool Congress.

Police have arrested 23 people so far; one of those arrested was held in connection with the bomb attack that killed Sheikh, while the rest have been held over the fires and deaths. Two cases have been filed and a special team is leading investigations, police said.
