We Will Force Rahul Gandhi, Request Him To Become Cong Chief: Kharge

Mumbai: Rahul Gandhi would be “forced and requested” to return as Congress President as there’s no one other than him who has a pan-India appeal, party leader Mallikarjun Kharge said.

The Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said anyone who wants to lead the party should be known across the country and supported from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and from West Bengal to Gujarat.

“He should be well-recognised, accepted man to the entire Congress party”, Kharge told PTI on Friday. “So, no body is there (in the party with such a stature).

He recalled that all senior leaders had “forced” Sonia Gandhi to join the party and work, and requested Rahul Gandhi to “come and fight”.

“You tell me the option. Who is this? (in any party other than Rahul Gandhi)”, Kharge asked.

On reports that Rahul Gandhi was unwilling to take over, Kharge said he would be requested and asked him to take charge “for the sake of the party, for the country’s sake, for fighting the RSS-BJP and to keep the country united”.

Kharge also referred to the party’s upcoming ‘Bharat Jodi Yatra’ and said Rahul Gandhi is needed for ‘Jodo India’.

“We will ask him, we will force him and request him (to return as Congress president). We stand behind him. We will try to chase him,” the former Union minister said.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body, will hold a virtual meeting on Sunday to approve the schedule for the dates for the election of the Congress president.

Sonia Gandhi will preside over the CWC meeting. Many leaders are publicly encouraging Rahul Gandhi to become the party president again. However, uncertainty and suspense remain on this issue. Several party insiders say that Rahul Gandhi is firm on his stand that he will not be the AICC president.

He resigned from the post of Congress President after the party suffered a second consecutive defeat in the parliamentary elections in 2019.

Sonia Gandhi, who took over the reins of the party again as interim president, also offered to step down in August 2020 following an open rebellion by a section of leaders, called the G-23, but the CWC refused to continue. asked for. was requested.
