We’ll Ensure Ukraine Returnees Complete Their Courses: Kerala CM

Mumbai: Kerala government will take all possible steps, after informing the Centre and NMC, for enabling Indian students coming from Ukraine to complete their courses in medicine and other subjects, CM Pinarayi Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister also asked the State Medical Council to allow provisional registration of students returning from Ukraine to complete a one-year internship or remaining courses of study in medical colleges or hospitals attached to such institutions, free of cost.

Vijayan was responding to notice by CPI(M) MLA CK Harendran during the Kerala Assembly session, drawing the chief minister’s attention to the plight of Malayali students, who returned from Ukraine without completing their education due to the ongoing war there and seeking his intervention to resolve their problems.

Harendran said that steps need to be taken to ensure that students can complete their education/courses and also recover certificates and other documents left in the country after fleeing the war-torn country.

The CM said so far 3,379 Malayalee students have been brought back to Kerala with the help of the Center and NORKA development offices in Delhi and Mumbai.

He further said that the central government will have a major role in ensuring that the students who have returned from Ukraine due to the war are able to continue and complete their courses as well as obtain their certificates and other valuable documents.

The Chief Minister said that a special cell under the leadership of Norka along with the health department would work on this and an amount of Rs 10 crore has been earmarked in the budget for 2022-23.

Further decisions on the education of medical students returning from Ukraine can only be taken on the recommendation of the National Medical Commission, which has guidelines for completing internships of medical students who return without completing their courses or internships due to unusual and compelling circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic or wars, he added.
