Shreyas Iyer Could Be The Next Big Thing In Indian Cricket: Sunil Gavaskar

Mumbai: Team India completed another series whitewash for the fifth consecutive series at home under the leadership of new all-format leader Rohit Sharma.

With India not playing a Test match after the T20 World Cup in October, except for an awkward match in England, it is time to take a look at the future and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar picked the “next big thing” in Indian cricket.

Shreyas Iyer performed brilliantly in the Bangalore Test, scoring 92 and 67 in two innings to become the first Indian batsman to score two half-centuries in the same day-night Test.

On a tricky Chinnaswamy track, which offered uneven bounce and turns, Iyer set the tone in the first innings with a 98-ball 92 that helped India finish with 252. In the second innings, he scored a brilliant 67 that saw India set a target of 477 against Sri Lanka.

Asked if Iyer is the next big thing in Indian cricket, Gavaskar in a conversation with Star Sports replied, “Yeah, definitely, he looks like that.”

“Because the way a guy plays, he’s got great batting, the shots he’s got. He’s a good looking guy. So it all points to the fact that in the next six-eight months he could be the next big thing in Indian cricket,” he added.

Iyer was named the Player of the Match for his effort in the second Test.

“I have always dreamt about playing Test cricket for India, good feeling to come and contribute, want to keep this going,” he said in the post-match presentation.

India sealed the series after beating Sri Lanka by 238 runs in the pink-ball Test in Bengaluru on Monday and hence won India’s last domestic competition in 2022.
