Mumbai: According to Antigua’s The Daily Observer newspaper report, Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Brown said that the citizenship of the fugitive trader Mehul Choksi will be cancelled and the diamantaire will be sent back to India.

Caribbean twin-island state Antigua and Barbuda gave its citizenship to Mehul Choksi in November 2017 under its controversial civil investment program, which allows the world’s rich to take another passport.

The Antiguan newspaper quoted PM Gaston Brown, saying, “His (citizenship) citizenship was acted upon; He got it, but the reality is that his citizenship will be cancelled and he will be returned to India; So there is the resort. It is not the case that we are trying to provide a safe harbour for criminals, which are involved in financial crimes.”

Meanwhile, the Indian government has refused to comment because he has no official information about this matter. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said, “I am not aware of this matter, I would not like to comment on this.”

Prior to this, Choksi told the court that he was not running away from the law, but was constrained by his medical condition and was preventing him from returning to India. He had claimed that he had left India for passing bypass surgery in January 2018, and not to avoid prosecution.

After which Bombay High Court (HC) directed Mahul Choksi’s counsel to submit his medical papers by July 1 so that it can be ascertained whether Choksi can safely travel to India. The court has asked Sir JJ Hospital to present a report by July 9, if Choksi can be brought to India using a special air ambulance.

Mehul Choksi is one of the primary accused in the Rs 13,500 crore fraud at Punjab National Bank.
