3rd COVID Wave Will Not Come On Its Own, Says PM To People ‘Enjoying Before 3rd Wave’

The interaction was decided in wake of a spike in Covid-19 cases in the northeast despite a drop in fresh cases across India

Mumbai: PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed concern over people crowding hill stations without wearing masks. He said some people proudly say they want to enjoy before the third COVID-19 wave hits the country.

“The idea shouldn’t be ‘when will the third wave come?’, or ‘let’s go and have some fun before the pandemic rises again’. We all should consider the situation and prevent the third wave from happening. What I currently see in hill stations is a matter of concern. We should not let our guard down like this,” PM Modi said.

He said visuals of people travelling without face masks in hill stations and crowded markets are not acceptable behaviour because “the virus is very smart and mutates quickly”.

“The number of Covid-19 cases is increasing. We need to take strict steps to control the situation at the micro-level. We need to keep an eye on the COVID variant. Experts are studying them. We need to encourage people to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour,” PM Modi said in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister made this statement after meeting the Chief Ministers of all the North Eastern States to review the situation of COVID-19 in the region, at a time when the second wave of the pandemic is raging across the country.

He reiterated the importance of the ‘3-T formula’ to defeat the COVID-19 virus and said that the only way to defeat the virus is the ‘test-track-treat’ method that India has been doing since last year.

“He gave an account of improvements in medical infrastructure to better deal with COVID-19 cases and support through PM CARES Fund. He assured timely action to reduce the number of cases in their states along with the positivity rate,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The Chief Ministers of Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram participated in the meeting.

The interaction was decided in wake of a spike in Covid-19 cases in the northeast despite a drop in fresh cases across India.

PM Modi will interact with Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, Maharashtra and Kerala via video conferencing at 11 am on July 16 to discuss the Covid-19 situation in these states.
