60% Of All Active COVID-19 Cases Reported In Maharashtra: Centre

Mumbai: The Center said on Wednesday that Maharashtra accounts for 60% of all active COVID-19 cases and 45% of all new coronavirus-related deaths in the country.

Addressing a press conference, Union Health Ministry Secretary, Rajesh Bhushan said that India seems to return to a category as various states in the country are noticing a surge in the cases, with Maharashtra topping the list.

The lowest point of new COVID-19 cases was observed on February 9, unlike today, nearly by 43% there is an increase in new cases and deaths have been increased by nearly 37% since last few weeks.

Maharashtra topped the list, pointing to the second wave as the state recorded 17,864 on 16 March. Yesterday, the Center also told the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government that the state was “at the beginning of the second wave of Covid” and that there was a lack of Covid-appropriate behaviour and “tracking and testing of cases”

On the other hand, in the case of Karnataka, the positivity rate has increased by 1.3%. The ministry has advanced the state government to increase the absolute number of advanced tests as ‘testing, tracing and treatment’ has been effectively followed in many states to prevent proliferation.

Followed by Kerala with 1,970 while Punjab reported 1,463 new cases, the ministry said.

He said “Punjab’s positivity rate is now 6.8% which is worrisome”, Bhushan said. “This shows that the proper behaviour of COVID-19 is not being followed in the state,” he added.

Talking about New Delhi, he said, “In the last 24 hours, there have been more than 400 cases in the city. The positivity rate is less than 1%, however, it has increased from 0.4% to 0.6%”.

Meanwhile, India recorded the highest number of total Coronavirus cases this year, with a total of 1,14,38,734 from the total COVID-19 tally on Wednesday with 28,903 new infections.

The death toll rose to 1,59,044 with 188 new deaths, the highest in nearly two months, it was updated at 8 am.
