08 Dead, 800 Hospitalised In Visakhapatnam After Gas Leak Mishap

Mumbai: At least eight people including a child, were killed and about 800 people were hospitalized after a styrene gas leak at RR Venkatapuram village here on Thursday.

The accident occurred in the LG polymer industry on Thursday morning.

“With eight people have been died so far, one of them fell into the well while trying to escape. The incident took place around 3:30 am. The evacuation operation is still on. The plant was closed due to the nationwide lockout,” Andhra State DGP, Damodar Gautam Sawang told ANI.

RK Meena of CPK Visakhapatnam city said, “The gas has been neutralized. The NDRF team has reached the spot. There was a style gas leak. We came to know about this and we alerted the villagers. We have evacuated the village. Now we are conducting a door-to-door search.”

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office said that Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy would leave for Visakhapatnam and go to King George Hospital where people affected by the gas leak incident are being treated.

The CMO of Andhra Pradesh said, “The Chief Minister is closely monitoring the situation and has directed the district machinery to take immediate steps and provide all possible assistance.”

The Chief Minister enquired about the gas leak incident and directed the district officials to take every possible step to save lives and bring the situation under control.
