A Strong Contender For Team India’s Top Selector Position, Has Left The Delhi Capitals

Mumbai: Ajit Agarkar, who is the frontrunner for the Team India chief selector’s job, on Thursday left Delhi Capitals. Agarkar was the assistant coach of the Delhi-based IPL franchise.

Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has also left the franchise, Delhi Capitals announced. The BCCI has asked potential candidates to send their applications by June 30

As an assistant coach with DC and a commentator, Agarkar earns far more than the current annual compensation of the chief selector, and the BCCI will have to reconsider the current wage structure.

PTI reported on Wednesday that Agarkar is in the race for the top post, and his departure from the franchise confirmed that he will be in the hot seat once the national selection committee selects the T20 squad for the tour of the West Indies.

“You will always have a place to call home here. Thank You, Ajit and Watto, for your contributions. All the very best for your future endeavors,” DC tweeted.

Agarkar had previously considered for the position of selector in 2021, when Chetan Sharma of the Northern Zone became the panel’s head.

In reality, Agarkar was beaten out by his old Mumbai colleague Abey Kuruvilla, despite the fact that he had only one year left on his contract after serving as junior selection committee head for four years.

The 45-year-old former Ramakant Acherkar protégé was a far more decorated contender, having applied with 191 ODIs, 26 Tests, and four T20s under his belt.

However, it came to light that the previous administration (2021) of the Mumbai Cricket Association had a problem with his candidature, and hence the BCCI did not adopt his case.

Inducting Agarkar would also have precluded Chetan from becoming chairman, as he had strong support from a segment of the board.

It is assumed that the current MCA regime will not have difficulty because Salil Ankola is already on the roster.

Dilip Vengsarkar and Ravi Shastri are two more names in the running, however, it is unclear whether any of them has applied for the job.

Vengsarkar’s problem is that he only has one year left on his contract. Vengsakar served as chairman of selectors from September 2005 to September 2008, and the maximum term is four years.
