A Woman Lost One Lakh Rupees Over A 1500 Rupees Saree

Mumbai: A 45-year-old woman lost 1 lakh when she contacted the customer care service for the refund of a defective saree of 1500 bucks.

Mona Mankar, the victim, lives in Wadala and works in a private company. She ordered a saree on an online portal and selected the mode of payment as COD. She paid the amount on receiving the package.

On opening the package, she was disappointed as it was a defective piece. She sent a message about the saree on the site. Due to no response, she had to contact customer care.

On contacting them, she was asked to fill in her personal details, but within seconds one lakh rupees was deducted from her bank account.

The customer care executive was a fraudster. On being contacted, he told the woman that the money will be transferred to her account using the e-wallet. He also asked her to open an account if it wasn’t already there.

Thinking the process was genuine, she gave all her details and she kept following the instructions. As soon as the process was complete, she received alerts on her mobile about transactions taking place there were four transactions of 25000 each.

When she came to know she has been duped, she contacted the bank and blocked her account and also registered a complaint with the police. She neither got the saree nor her one lakh.
