Mumbai: AAP has approached SC seeking directions for the state Election Commission to conduct municipal elections in Delhi in a free, fair and expeditious manner without the interference from Centre.

The petition was filed after the Delhi SEC postponed the MCD elections indefinitely, citing a communication from the Lieutenant Governor that the Center was planning to merge the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi, reported news agency ANI.

Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP MCD is opposing the postponement of the elections.

On Monday, party leaders protested outside the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in Delhi to force the SEC to delay municipal elections.

Announcing the protest, senior AAP leader and MCD in-charge Mr Durgesh Pathak had alleged that the Election Commission was about to announce the dates for the elections three municipal corporations but deferred it after it was “threatened and blackmailed” by the ruling BJP.
