Assam And Mizoram Issue Joint Statement, Agree To Maintain Peace

Mumbai: Days after violent boundary clashes, Assam and Mizoram governments issued a joint statement on Thursday agreeing to maintain peace in the inter-state border areas. They stated that they would find solutions to disputes through discussions.

The two states have agreed not to send their respective forest and police forces for patrol, domination, enforcement or new deployment in areas where conflicts have occurred in recent days.

Assam and Mizoram decided to take forward the initiative taken by the Union Home Ministry and their Chief Ministers to defuse tensions around the inter-state border and find a permanent solution to the disputes through discussions. The Assam government will also cancel its advisory issued earlier against travel to Mizoram.

The statement was issued after Assam ministers arrived in Aizawl and held a meeting with three representatives of Mizoram – Home Minister Lalchmalliana, Land Revenue and Settlement Minister Lalruatkima and Home Department Secretary Vanlalangahasaka.

“We are hopeful (of interaction). Assam wants to keep the spirit of unity and brotherhood among North-eastern people,” Bora earlier said.

The meeting took place at Isle Club. Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga had also expressed hope that the meeting would help resolve the border dispute between the two northeastern states.

“Tomorrow that is 5th of August, 2021 representatives from Assam Govt. led by the senior minister will meet representatives of Mizoram Govt. led by a senior minister. I am sure important steps will be achieved for the solution of the border problem,” Zoramthanga had said in a tweet on Wednesday.

During the last one week, there were violent clashes on the border between the two states. At least six Assam Police policemen and one civilian lost their lives during the violence.

Chief Ministers of the two states also engaged in a bitter war of words on social media and blamed each other for unrest, prompting Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene. Shah urged the two chief ministers to resolve the conflict peacefully.
