Batla House Convict Ariz Gets Death Sentence; Court Calls Case ‘Rarest Of Rare’

Mumbai: A Delhi court has awarded the death penalty to Ariz Khan, who was recently convicted for the killing of Delhi Police inspector Mohan Chand Sharma during the 2008 Batla House encounter.

It said the case fell under the “rarest of the rare” category, meriting the death sentence for Khan. A fine of ₹11 lakh was also imposed on him.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 11 lakh against Khan and directed that Rs 10 lakh of the fine amount be given to Sharma’s family as compensation. It also recommended additional compensation to the government of the family of the deceased police officer.

Khan, who is allegedly associated with the terrorist organization Indian Mujahideen, was convicted for Sharma’s murder and other offences during the encounter last week.

Earlier today, the Delhi Police sought before the court death sentence for Khan, saying an exemplary punishment in the case is required.

The judge said that it “duly proved that Ariz Khan and his associates killed the police officer and fired on the police officer.”

In September 2008, Inspector Sharma of Delhi’s Special Cell was killed during an encounter in Jamia Nagar in South Delhi.

After his murder, Khan managed to escape from the spot and was declared a declared criminal. He was arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police on February 14, 2018, and later faced trial.
