Boxer Lovlina Borgohain Wins Bronze Medal As India Bag 3rd Medal At Tokyo Olympics

Mumbai: Lovlina Borgohain has become the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh (2008) and Mary Kom (2012) to win a bronze medal at Olympics.

The 23-year-old lost to Turkey’s Busenaz Sürmeneli in the semi-finals of the women’s welterweight division (64kg-69kg) at Tokyo Olympics.

Busenaz Surmeneli defeated Borgohain by a unanimous decision of 5-0.

All five judges ruled in favor of the Turkish boxer as he stampeded his dominance. Lovlina started the first round with a good strategy as she did not let the Turkish boxer dominate her.

But soon, Busenaz showed his class and demolished the Indian defense as the judges ruled in his favor. The second round started right where the first one had left off as Surmenelli dominated all the way.

And to make it worse for Borgohain, she scored a penalty in that round. The final round was more brutal and clinical for Busenaz’s side as they ruthlessly suppressed any chance of the 23-year-old Indian making a comeback.

The top-seed from Turkey will now face China’s Hong Gu in the final.
