Budget 2019: 17 Prestigious Tourist Destinations To Be Developed As World-Class Destinations: Sitharaman

Mumbai: Presenting her first budget in the Lok Sabha on Friday, Nirmala Sitharaman said that nearly 17 prestigious tourist destinations are being developed as world-class destinations.

Sitharaman said, “Nearly 17 prestigious tourist destinations are being developed as world-class destinations and digital reserves are proposed to preserve tribal history.”

The Economic Survey, which was introduced in Parliament on Thursday, emphasized that there is a need to strengthen the coordination mechanism of various ministries and stakeholders to resolve issues in tourism promotion in the country.

While highlighting the severe recession in the tourism sector in 2018-19, the survey said that foreign tourist arrival (FTA) in 2018-19 10.6 million compared to 10.4 million in 2017-18.

The report says, “In the context of growth, the growth rate of FTA has decreased from 14.2% in 2017-18 to 2.1% in 2018-19.”

Survey also showed that FDI in hotels and tourism also decreased from $ 1,132 million in 2017-18 to $ 1,076 million in 2018-1

The State governments need to be sensitised about tourism being a major driver of employment and poverty alleviation, it said.
