Centre Sanctions Rs 15,000 Crore To Fight COVID-19

`Mumbai: In a recent development, the Center has announced Rs 15,000 crore for ‘India COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Package’.

The sanctioned funds will be used to immediate COVID-19 for emergency response – Rs 7,774 crore and for medium-term support (1-4 years) under the mission mode approach.

The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry said in a statement on Thursday, the major objectives of the package include the development of diagnostics and the growing emergency response to slow and limit COVID-19 in India through COVID-19 dedicated treatment facilities, centralised procurement of essential medical equipment and drugs required for treatment of infected patients, strengthen and build resilient national and state health systems to support prevention and preparedness for future disease outbreaks.

It will focus on laboratories and surveillance activities, biosecurity preparedness, epidemiological research and establishing consistently attractive communities and conducting risk communication activities. These interventions and initiatives will be implemented under the overall umbrella of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The major stake will be used to enhance strong emergency response, strengthen national and state health systems, as well as epidemiological research and multi-sector national institutions and health, community engagement and risk communication and implementation, management, capacity building, monitoring, and evaluation component.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is authorized to re-appropriate the resources between the components of the package and the various implementing agencies – National Health Mission, Central Procurement, Railways, Department of Health Research/ICMR, and National Centre for Disease Control — as per the evolving emergent situation.
