Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated shooter Avani Lekhara for securing the gold medal with a world record score of 250.6 in women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 at the Chateauroux Para Shooting World Cup.

Congratulations @AvaniLekhara for this historic accomplishment. May you keep scaling newer heights of success and inspiring others. My best wishes,” PM Modi tweeted.

Avani Lekhara thanked the Prime Minister for supporting her after she won gold and secured a spot for Paris 2024.

The 20-year-old shooter broke his own world record of 249.6 to cement his place at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Poland’s Emilia Babska won the silver medal with an overall score of 247.6, while Sweden’s Anna Norman took the bronze with 225.6.

The SH1 category is for athletes with lower limb impairment to compete in rifle events.

Lekhara grabbed the top prize three days after being on the verge of missing out on the tournament as her coach and escort were initially denied visas.

However, the issue was resolved after the intervention of the Sports Authority of India and the Sports Ministry.

“Proud to bring home the gold in the R2 10M Air Rifle SH1 event with a WR score & India’s 1st Paris2024 Quota, at the Chateauroux2022. My 1st Int. event since the @paralympics. A big thank you to everyone who has supported me!” she tweeted.

In August last year, Lekhara won a gold medal in the 10m air rifle standings event in the SH1 category at the Tokyo Paralympics.

She then won a bronze medal in the women’s 50m Rifle Three Position SH1 event, making her the first Indian woman to win multiple medals at the Paralympics.
