Congress Leader DK Shivakumar To Remain In ED Remand Till Sept 17

Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate on Friday claimed senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar in court that he was “evicted” and was giving irrelevant answers during his interrogation. Members of Karnataka Legislative Assembly are under investigation in the money laundering case.

After which Enforcement Directorate on Friday was given a 5-day extended remand of senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar.

Sivakumar was produced before a special court at Rouse Avenue Court Complex in the national capital as his remand period with the Enforcement Directorate was scheduled to end today.

“His statement was recorded to ascertain the modus operandi. He was unequivocal, gave irrelevant answers and took several breaks between interrogations,” the Enforcement Directorate told the court.

However, courtroom drama ensued during the hearing, in which ED was taken with the judge to Judge Avenue Court and asked what the investigating agency meant by saying that she was “not cooperating”. The ED was quick to defend his claim and said: “he is not providing details that are in his knowledge”.

Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, the ED’s counsel, said, “As per our investigation, his tainted amount is more than Rs 200 crore and ‘Benami’ property worth Rs 800 crore.”

In response, the judge questioned the ED whether Sivakumar, in fact, wants to reply to the ED if all are granted an extended 5-day remand. “Do you think he will reply in 5 days? If he did not answer, will he answer now?”

The Congress leader was detained by the enforcement agency on September 3 in connection with the case and was remanded by the Delhi court on ED remand for a period of 10 days.

The ED slapped DK Shivakumar in a money laundering case in September last year following a complaint by the Income Tax Department. The I-T department during the preliminary investigation revealed unaccounted assets belonging to the senior Karnataka Congress leader. I-T bridges also found records of hawala operations, which included a network of people from Bengaluru and Delhi.
