Coronavirus Scare: Saudi Arabia Suspends International Flights For Two Weeks

Mumbai: Local media reported on Saturday that Saudi Arabia has temporarily suspended all international flights for two weeks following the coronavirus outbreak.

Khaleej Times reported that the time period would be considered an official holiday, the ministry said in a statement, for residents who cannot return during the two weeks, Khaleej Times reported from Sunday.

During the two-week period, some flights will only be allowed in “exceptional cases”, the ministry said.

On Friday, 24 new cases of COVID-19 infection were reported in the Kingdom, bringing the total to 86.

Earlier this week, Riyadh imposed a temporary lockout on its eastern Qatif region, home to a large Shia-Muslim population, with the Interior Ministry announcing that all individuals diagnosed with the disease are from the same municipality.

According to local media reports, Saudi Arabia also suspended all educational and Quranic activities in mosques, helping to prevent the spread of viral infections.

It has suspended travel from across the European Union and 12 other countries in Asia and Africa.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the outbreak as a global pandemic as more than 140,000 people have been diagnosed with the virus in 114 countries.

More than 5,000 people have died in China after contracting COVID-19 worldwide.
