COVID-19: Railways Converts 2,500 Coaches As Isolation wards

Mumbai: The Indian Railways has converted 2,500 coaches into isolation wards, achieving almost half the target of producing 5,000 such coaches, as part of the government’s efforts to combat coronavirus.

Amid the lockdown, when manpower resources are limited and rationalized and rotated, the various sectors of the railway have made so many conversions impossible in a very short period of time. With the conversion of about 2500 compartments, 40,000 isolation beds are now ready for contingency, the railway said in a statement.

Once the prototype was approved, conversion action was quickly initiated by the Zonal Railway.

An average of 375 coaches is being replaced by the Railways in a day. The statement said that work is going on at 133 places in the country.

These coaches are equipped as per the medical consultation issued. Efforts are being made to ensure the best possible stay and medical supervision as per requirements and criteria.

It may be mentioned that these coaches are being designed as isolation coaches only as a contingency and to supplement the Health Ministry’s efforts in fighting COVID-19, the statement added.”

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India said on Monday that the total number of COVID-19 positive cases was 4,067.

109 people have died across the country due to the deadly disease.

There are 3,666 active cases in the country while 292 people have been cured/discharged/migrated.
