Delhi Police Starts Removing Barricades At Tikri border; Road Remains Closed

Mumbai: Delhi Police on Thursday began removing barricades at the Tikri border where farmers have been protesting against the Centre’s three farm laws, a senior officer said.

The road remained closed for more than 11 months due to farmers’ agitation and inconvenience to commuters. The process of opening roads from one side of the carriageway has been started for vehicles going from Ghaziabad to New Delhi on the Ghazipur border. In Ghazipur, Delhi Police launched a crackdown early today and removed all barricades and barbed wire to open the roads.

Delhi Police yesterday started the process of removing barricades put up at the Tikri border, allowing the movement of traffic from New Delhi to Haryana. The barricades were put up in the wake of the violence that took place during the farmers’ protests on 26 January. Thousands of protesters broke barricades to enter Delhi and ransacked several parts of the national capital during their tractor rally organized to protest the Centre’s three new agricultural laws on January 26 this year.

Police personnel present at the spot said, “Barricades are being removed, roads are being opened. We have got orders.” Special CP Law and Order Deependra Pathak told that the Ghazipur border will be opened for passengers in some time.

Pathak said, “This is an initiative of Delhi Police and we are removing the block which we have put up. We will request the farmers to open this highway for the people. . We are hoping our gesture will be reciprocated by farmers.”

When farmers gathered at various border points around the capital to protest against the Centre’s three agricultural laws in November last year, police had erected massive nails and large concrete blocks on the roads.

Earlier on October 21, the Supreme Court had said that farmers have the right to protest but roads cannot be blocked indefinitely. This came to the fore while hearing a petition against the blockade of roads between Delhi and Noida due to farmers’ protests against three agricultural laws.

Farmers have been protesting at different sites since November 26 last year against the three enacted farm laws: Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
