Deposit Ganesh Idols For Immersion In Mumbai: BMC To Pandals

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked pandals to deposit Ganesh idols at collection points for immersion after Ganesh Chaturthi next month as no procession will be allowed.

BMC staff will collect the idols from these points and immerse them in naturals ponds or the sea.

The organizers had asked each Mandal to allow 10 members. But like last year, the BMC has also put a stop to the procedures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“We will set up collection points for idols in each of the 24 wards of the city. Organizers can deposit their idols here for immersion and can also visit Chowpatty collection sites. However, no process will be allowed,” said a BMC official.

The manuals have also asked the BMC to allow citizens with online facilities to visit the pandals for darshan.

The BMC official said, “As per the government guidelines, only online darshan is allowed. However, a meeting has been scheduled with Mumbai Police and the organisers on this subject.”

Like last year, the members of the Mandal will have to hand over the idols to the municipal employees who will later take them to the water. The civic body has also said that manuals should follow all COVID precautions and there should be no crowding at Ganpati places.

There are more than 10,000 public Ganeshotsav mandals in the city. In a meeting held on Monday regarding the demands of Ganesh mandals, the BMC has directed the road department to start the repair work of Andheri-Kurla road before the 10-day festival.

Disaster management training will also be arranged for the board members. Apart from this, the city Health Department has been asked to conduct surprise inspections of sweet shops and factories in the city.

Last year, the BMC had asked citizens and mandates to give preference to artificial ponds in each of the 24 wards.

Naresh Dahibaokar, president of Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti, said, “Last year, many mandals carried out immersion in the artificial ponds while others held symbolic celebrations. However, this year, with many members vaccinated, there have been demands to carry out immersions only at natural water bodies and the sea. We have asked BMC to allow 20 members that are fully vaccinated to bring the idols for immersion.”
