Doctor Commits Suicide After Being Harassed By Her Colleagues

Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a doctor identified as Payal Tadvi committed suicide on May 22. During the investigation, a suicide note was found in which the victim has mentioned names of her three seniors claiming that she was tortured by them over her caste.

Meanwhile, the accused has been arrested by Agripada police on May 28. All the three accused are in judicial custody.

The crime branch will file an 1800 charge-sheet on the basis of a suicide note written by Dr Tadvi. Although the original copy of the note hasn’t been found, it was retrieved from the victim’s phone on July 4. All the details of the harassment were there against her seniors Dr Hema Ahuja, Dr Bhakti Mehare and Dr Ankita Khandelwal. It wasn’t clear if the suicide note had been destroyed or not if it was, then by whom, is still a question.

According to the police, the note contains two major incidents that ultimately led to Payal’s death. The first incident occurred on May 21 where allegedly the victim was trolled by her seniors for posting a photo with her juniors on social media after she went out for dinner with them. They told her that she has time for photos and outings but not to do her work.

The second incident that Dr Tadvi mentioned occurred on 22 May, the day she committed suicide. She said she had to return to her hostel in the middle of the day as her seniors had insulted and verbally abused her.

Out of the three pages, one whole page was dedicated to Dr.Bhakti Mehare.Dr.Tadvi said Dr.Mehare, who was her roommate for a few months and thus knew about the caste and marital status and eventually used it against her. The last page is dedicated to her family where she has apologized to her parents and husband for taking such a drastic step. Her suicide note has formed the centre of the charge sheet to be filed.
