Mumbai: According to the Election Commission report, early trends showed AAP crossed the majority mark at 9:45 am with 79 seats in 117 Punjab Assembly, for which the majority mark is 59. Punjab Lok Congress leader Captain Amarinder Singh is also trailing in second place after the second round of counting. Charanjit Singh Channi was following from Chamkaur Sahib. According to the Election Commission, Congress had 14 more SAD (7).

Exit polls on Monday predicted a clear victory for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, with the party’s winning scale varying in different elections.

AAP’s chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann’s residence at Dhuri has been decorated with flowers and preparations for jalebi had started even before the counting of votes began.

If AAP wins Punjab, it will be the party’s first victory in the state and a major improvement in its performance in the 2017 elections, when it finished second only to the Congress. Congress fought factionalism and the anti-incumbency wave and entered the elections.

The party changed its chief minister in September last year, even as new Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu hinted at his ambition to become chief minister. The Congress finally announced Charanjit Singh Channi, the first Dalit chief minister of Punjab, as its chief ministerial candidate, days before the elections on February 20.

The Shiromani Akali Dal, which eventually broke its alliance with the BJP over the three agricultural laws that were repealed, allied with the Bahujan Samaj Party for the assembly elections. This is the first time that the BJP has contested more than 65 seats in Punjab.

It forged an alliance with former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress and SS Dhindsa-led SAD (United). BJP leaders have spoken of a strong performance in the elections.

Punjab recorded an average voter turnout of 65.50 per cent on February 20 compared to over 77 per cent in 2017.
