England, India Docked 2 WTC Points For Slow Over-Rate, Players Fined 40% Of Match Fee

Mumbai: Both England and India have been docked two points each on World Test Championship (WTC) points table for slow over-rate in the first Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Chris Broad of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the ban when both sides decided to reduce their target by two overs, keeping time allowances in mind.

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees if their team fails to bowl within the allotted time.

In addition, in accordance with Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship Playing Conditions, a side is awarded a penalty of one point for each over short. Captain Joe Root and Virat Kohli pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed sanctions, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Michael Gough and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire David Mills made the allegations. The last day of the first Test match between India and England ended in a draw after being spoiled by rain.

The visitors looked set for victory, needing 157 runs to win on the final day, with nine wickets in hand, but the weather gods had something else in mind. England and India will now lock horns in the second Test beginning Thursday at the Lord’s Cricket Ground.

The teams will now clash in the second Test at Lord’s, starting on Thursday, 12 August.
