Entire Eligible Population Will Be Vaccinated By 2021-End: Centre Tells SC

Mumbai: The Centre informed the Supreme Court on Monday that it is confident to vaccinate all citizens over the age of 18 against coronavirus disease (COVID-19) by the end of this year.

During the apex court hearing on COVID-19 crisis management in the country, the government informed all citizens about its plan to vaccinate and claimed that the domestic production of vaccines would meet the demands of dosing.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the doses produced by domestic vaccine manufacturers – Serum Institute of India, Bharat Biotech and Reddy’s Lab – would be sufficient to vaccinate people over the age of 18.

The three-member bench said, “In the national crisis, the central government should buy the vaccine for the entire country. You should tell them that we will negotiate globally and procure vaccines for them so that there is clarity.”

Highlighting the ongoing crisis of scarcity of vaccine supplements in the country, the apex court said that the central government should do the job of sourcing jabs for the entire country. This comes amid reports of several states issuing a global tender for the purchase of vaccine supplements after facing severe shortages.

The apex court also questioned the Center on compulsory registration on the CoWIN portal for COVID vaccination, emphasizing that people in rural areas may face difficulties.

“Policymakers must have ears on the ground, there is a digital divide. The Centre must see what’s happening across the country and change its policy accordingly,” said SC on mandatory registration on CoWIN app.
