Feel Humiliated, Whoever Cong Trusts Should Be Made Punjab CM: Amarinder After Resigning

Mumbai: Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as the Punjab chief minister on Saturday, amid the ongoing political tussle with Navjot Singh Sidhu who was recently appointed as the chief of the Congress’ Punjab unit.

Raveen Thukral, Media Advisor to the Chief Minister, said Capt Amarinder Singh has resigned from his council of ministers

Addressing a press conference at the gate of the Raj Bhavan, the 79-year-old Amarinder Singh said he felt humiliated.

“I feel humiliated, feel they doubt my work. I told the Congress President that I will resign. And they can appoint anyone they have confidence in.” “They called MLAs twice in Delhi,” he added.

The move came as factionalism resumed in the state unit, prompting a request for a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party in protest against them. Elections in Punjab are due early next year.

Four rebel ministers and MLAs had written to the party command demanding a meeting of the legislature party. Some of them said that they do not have the support of most of the MLAs.

Amarinder Singh, who was Captain during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, was sworn in as the 26th Chief Minister of Punjab in 2017 when Congress won the assembly elections with a majority. He served as the President of the Punjab Congress Committee from 2010 to 2013.

Singh had represented Patiala (Urban) five times as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly and Samana and Talwandi Sabo once each.

In 2015, he was again elected as President of the Punjab Congress. Singh resigned from Lok Sabha on November 23, 2016, and fully dedicated himself to Punjab polls and the party came in power in the state with a majority.
